Humble Beginnings to Stellar Futures: A Step Into Journalism
Information, a necessity in this day and age for everyone’s well being and safety. Journalism being a powerful outlet to relay this information, Melissa Rendon eagerly learns and refines her skills so she can pursue her dreams.
Starting her passion at Rialto High School, Rendon joined the school paper to put her on a course toward her future. Rendon and her friends both shared a page on the school newspaper where they spoke about the new music releases. Though the paper didn’t have a music section, Rendon said that, “…the teacher asked if we wanted any new additions to the paper and my friend and I suggested a music column.” They would review a whole album from any artist to let the reader know if it is worth their time. The music section was not the only job that Rendon had, she was an active editor on the staff. She edited most of the staff’s news segments and was told that the teacher thought that Rendon and her friend were the best editors on the team.
This love for editing did not just come from the school’s newspaper itself, Rendon has always loved to write. With doubts about what to pursue in college, Rendon thought back to her time on the school newspaper and editing other people’s columns to realize that journalism was the outlet she needed for her future.
After reflecting on her past, Rendon now looks towards a bright future full of projects, plans and dreams. Rendon sees journalism as a stepping stone to pursue her passions and gain the skills to make her dreams a reality. She said at the moment she is unsure of what dream to pursue first. “It’s constantly changing between writing children’s books, being an editor, and working for a magazine company,” she said.
As she continues to develop and refine her skills and passions, Rendon happily sees the future she is creating, “I know for sure that I want my career to revolve around writing, editing, and filming,” she said.
With this love for journalism and writing, Rendon works towards her goals in creating a better future for herself.
